On 13 and 14 February Christie’s Auctions of Post-War & Contemporary Art in London welcomed new and established bidders in their 20s through to their 80s who competed for works at every price level, resulting a combined total of £96,306,275 / $150,418,090 / €111,575,060. Buyers from 33 countries on 5 continents, demonstrate a truly global appetite for the category. In total, 19 works sold for over £1 million (27 for over $1 million). 

The top price of the week was paid for Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Museum Security (Broadway Meltdown), which sold in the Evening Auction for £9,337,250 / $14,603,459 / €10,821,873 (evening auction; lot 30; estimate: £7 to £9 million; illustrated above centre).

The top lot of the Day Auction was Robert Indiana’s Love, which sold for £565,250 / $876,137 / €653,429 (lot 192; estimate: £450,000-550,000; illustrated above right).

A selection of 71 works of art from the Collection of Mrs. Ingvild Goetz totalled £6,741,026 / $10,448,590 / €7,792,625. The top lot of the collection was Christopher Wool’s Mad Cow, which sold for £2,281,250 / $3,567,875 / €2,643,969 (evening auction; lot 4; estimate: £700,000-900,000; illustrated above left).

Together, these works – which were expected to bring £3.7 million (SEK 37 million) – brought £8,750,875 (SEK 87,352,805), with nearly every lot selling in excess of its pre-sale high estimate. The artworks were presented within a series of sales – Surrealist Art Evening, Impressionist & Modern Art Day, and Contemporary Art Evening & Day. Tonight, Sotheby’s London Contemporary Art Evening Auction brought the strong total of £74,364,200/ $116,357,664/ €86,321,943, within pre-sale expectations (estimate: £61.2-84.5 million), representing Sotheby’s second-highest total for a February Sale of Contemporary Art in London.

The top lot of the evening’s sale was Francis Bacon’s 1980 oil on canvas triptych masterwork Three Studies for a Self-Portrait, which sold for £13,761,250 / $21,532,228 / €15,974,055 against an estimate of £10-15 million. Executed in the artist’s eighth decade at the age of 71 it belongs to a corpus of 11 triptych self-portraits in Bacon’s standard 14by12 inch format. The work was acquired by a German collector Jürgen Hall who will generously loan the work to a major international institution.

Christie’s is proud to announce the first U.S.-based Private Sales Exhibition for Andy Warhol at Christie’s, its multi-year, multi-platform partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Titled Andy Warhol in Minneapolis and held March 16-23, 2013, at Aria at the Jeune Lune, the industrial-chic event space in the heart of the Minneapolis Warehouse District, owned by art collector Peter Remes.  The week-long selling exhibition will make available to the public a curated group of more than 50 paintings, photographs, prints and works on paper by the Pop Art superstar, including a selection of works originally featured in Warhol’s 1975 show in Minneapolis.

Christie's London – The Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale and the auction of The Art of the Surreal took place on the evening of 6 February at Christie’s London, realising £136,462,100/ $213,426,725/ €157,340,801 and selling 89% by lot and 94% by value. The auctions had a combined pre-sale estimate of £89.8 million to £132.8 million. The top price was paid for Jeanne Hébuterne (au chapeau), 1919, by Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) which sold for £26,921,250/ $42,104,835/ €31,040,201 (estimate: £16-22 million, pictured above). In total, 32 works of art sold for over £1 million / 42 for over $1 million, and five artist records were set: led by Berthe Morisot’s portrait which set a new record price for a female artist at auction; a record for a sculpture by Renè Magritte; and records for a work by Alberto Magnelli, Kay Sage and Óscar Domínguez.

Christie’s Private Sales Introduces New Exhibition Category

Christie’s Private Sales will present Beyond Tradition: Chinese Contemporary Ink, its first exhibition of Chinese contemporary ink paintings in New York, from February 28 – March 22, 2013.  Coinciding with the First Open and Asian Art week sales, the exhibition will feature 25 works by nine of the most prominent artists in the field, including Liu Kuo-Sung, Li Huayi, Liu Dan, Gu Wenda, Xu Bing, Yang Jiechang, Qin Feng, Zheng Chongbin, and Qiu Zhijie. The exhibition showcases the modern reinterpretation of a traditional art form in a select group of innovative contemporary works. Introduced at Christie’s Hong Kong in November 2012, in response to growing global interest, the works will travel between New York and Hong Kong as part of an ongoing exhibition, serving as an introduction to the quickly emerging Chinese contemporary ink category.

£121m/ $190m Achieved at Sotheby's Tonight - 2nd Highest Total for an Impressionist & Modern Art Sale at Sotheby's London‏

This evening, Sotheby’s London Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art Sales brought a remarkable combined total of £121,075,400 / $190,500,035 / €140,798,252 (est. £103.2–149million), establishing the second-highest total for a Sotheby’s Evening Sale in this category in London. In total, 18 lots sold for over £1 million, 28 sold for over $1 million.

·    The top price of the evening was achieved for Pablo Picasso’s 1932 portrait of Marie-Thérèse, Femme Assise Près D’Une Fenêtre, which sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for £28,601,250/ $45,001,207/ €33,260,316 (est. £25-35 million).

·        From the Leopold Museum, Vienna, three exceptional works on paper by Egon Schiele, representing one of the most important groups of work on paper by the artist ever to come to the market, achieved a combined total of £14,011,750/ $22,046,088/ €16,294,226 against an estimate of £9-12 million. The top-selling work of the collection was Liebespaar (Selbstdarstellung Mit Wally) / Lovers (Selfportrait With Wally) from 1914, which achieved £7,881,250/ $12,400,359/ €9,165,084 and set an auction record for a work on paper by the artist (est. £6.5-8.5 million).

·        Claude Monet’s monumental water lily painting Nymphéas avec reflets de hautes herbes, which dates from 1914-17, sold for £9,001,250/ $14,162,567/ €10,467,529.

·        Leading the selection of works from The Collection of The Late Earl Of Jersey was Claude Monet’s magnificent snow scene Le Givre à Giverny (est. £4-6 million) which achieved realised £8,777,250/ $13,810,125/ €10,207,040, setting a new auction record for a snowscape by Monet .
